Finding Your Skin Type

The beginning of a proper skin care regimen requires that you determine what skin type you have. Since we all have varying skin types, we need to be aware of what special needs our respective skin may have. Products are not made in a one-type-for-all-use fashion. For example, an oily skin type of cream may add moisture to dry skin, but can cause problems on oily or problematic skin. Alternatively, a product designed to regulate sebum production may benefit oily skin types, but would not be appropriate for dry skin types.

If you are unsure as to which skin type you have, here is an easy test. Begin by gently, yet thoroughly, cleansing your face. After cleansing, wait for a period of one hour. After the hour period, carefully examine your skin in a mirror. Looke closely at what is called the "T Zone" area, which is the area across the brow and along the nose, down to the chin area. These particualr areas will help you determine your skin type. As you examine your skin, see if your skin type matchs any of the descriptions below. If so, then congratulations on finding your skin type. If not, feel free to contact us so we can assist you in finding the right products for your skin.

Dry Skin: If your examination showed any signs of dryness or any flaking of the skin, then you may have a "dry" skin type. Dry skin can be problematic, particularly as each season changes. Your skin be be reactive to colder, dryer temperatures. Dry skin can also exaggerate wrinkles and fine lines. It is important to select products for your skin that hydrate your skin and relieve the general tightness that you may feel.

Oily Skin: If your examination shows that your skin has an oily or shiny appearance, then you have "oily" skin. It is important to look for skin care products that can both purify your skin as well as regulate sebum production. A common comparison for oily skin is to that of an orange peel. The peel has a shiny appearnace withenlarged pores. The enlarged pores are problem areas because of their nature to collect sebum, dead skin cells, and other impurities. If the pores are not cleansed properly, you may have problems with blemishes.

Combination Skin: Generally, this is the most common skin type. Dry in some areas, partly oily in others, this skin type requires a balanced approach to skin care. You can generally use products for either combination or normal skin types.

Other Skin Types and Conditions: Finding your basic skin type is the beginning to understanding your overall skin care needs. For example, it is possible to have one skin type, but tendancies of another. This may sound confusing at first, but by careful examination you can comfortably develop the right regimen for your skin. Here are some additional characteristics that your skin may have:

Dehydrated Skin: This means your skin is lacking hydration. This can be caused by any number of reasons. Skin dehydration can occur with any skin type. If your skin has any of the following; flakiness, fine crepe like lines on the skin surface, or a tired and dull looking appearance, then your skin may be in need of hydration. Generally speaking, most people are in need os some hydration.

Rosacea Skin: Rosacea is considered a chronic (long-term), non-curable skin disease with periodic ups and downs. It characteristically involves the central region of the face, causing persistent redness or transient flushing over the areas of the face and nose that normally blush -- mainly the forehead, the chin and the lower half of the nose.

Sensitive Skin: From time to time almost anyone can acquire skin sensitivity, for any number of reasons. This state may be temporary, or you may be prone to a sensitive skin type. If your skin reacts to certain ingredients or products, becomes inflamed or reddened, or becomes irritated or burns easily in the sun, then you most likely have sensitive skin.

Also, remember that your skin type can and will change throughout your life. Factors such as; what climate you live in, your diet, your activity level, how old you are, hormonal changes, among other things will determine your skin type. Your current skin type may not be the same as your skin type five years ago. You need to constantly reassess your skin's needs.
